Yeah, it’s been a while since I updated this blog. The biggest issue I’ve had with RMVX is that it’s got a pretty severe number of limitations, and I’m not just talking about it being only able to design RPGs.
For example, one of the big issues with RMVX that I’ve run into so far is the serious limitation on tilesets. Although the five tabs available seem like they would offer enough diversity in content, I’ve found myself wishing that I had space to add extra features, for example alternate types of world map tiles that could best represent diverse RPG settings. For example, if I want to make a desert-themed area, I’ve only got a few tile types to work with. Adding variations on existing tiles to fit this format is also problematic because TileE is so limited.
One idea I did have was to create maps in a graphic design program with whatever tiles I need and then upload the maps into the database as Graphics/Parallaxes (under the Tools menu, Resource Manager file). I have yet to try this, though in one of the demos I saw for the Japanese version of this program, the entire background was an image. Here is an example of what I mean:
So, the next step is for me to try this out and see how it goes. Stay tuned…

using parallaxes in this way is very inventive, you don’t happen to have a link to the game itself do you?

The demo file for that game is included in the Japanese version of the game on the CD for it. I looked around for it online but apparently the old links for the game are no longer functioning. I originally saw it in the http://www.rpgrevolution.com downloads section.

hey, I just wanted to know if you minded whether I used the tiles you put up here as practice for an rpg maker thingie i’m working on. It’s not going anywhere except my computer, so you don’t have to worry about what happens to your work. I just want practice seeing different kinds of tiles and stuff. If you have an issue, let me know. thanks.

Hi Mike, the example mapmaking tiles (in earlier posts) I posted here are actually from this blog:
http://cyocorune.cocolog-nifty.com/daily_vx/
I translated the page using Google’s translation web app and, from what I can tell, this guy (known as Mack in RPG Maker design forums, and I’m assuming in Japanese, which I don’t read or speak) made these graphics for public use in any kind of project. FYI, he has all the tilesets organized on the blog there. Just click on the A1 through B ~ E links to get the tilesets. He also has a ton of sprites on there with all the basic walking animation poses.

I use parallax maps in one of my games… it works quite well! The only thing to be careful of is obstructions. I have an edited Tileset E in my project folder with a giant X on one of the tiles (so I can see where I can’t walk in the editor), and used the Spriteset_Map script to change the one actually loaded in the game. Works great.

I’ll have to check out that script you’re talking about.
